Balmoral Edging

What do you think of my edging?

Balmoral Edging

I started with the edging used for the "Half Square in Trinity Stitch" shawl in VLT (page 127). However, I replaced the trinity stitch portion with the filler stitch used in Balmoral. It's simple but I think it works. This way the centre pattern remains the focus of the shawl.

I really enjoy knitting on edgings but it is going slow. In three days, I've only done 30 of the 288 repeats. I'll do a few more repeats then get back to Forest Path, which hasn't been touched in over a week.

Yarn and Lace

Hand Maiden’s Mini Maiden in Periwinkle. It’s a 50/50 Silk/Wool blend. I saw this yarn at my LYS and it followed me home. I usually don't like single spun yarns and I have no idea what to make with it since there's only have 500 m; but I'm a sucker for anything with silk. Plus, it was on sale!

Hand Maiden Stash 3

I tried to get a good picture of Balmoral but the lighting was poor so I couldn’t. I’ll try again this weekend.

Chart G of Balmoral is finally finished. The last row had 1152 stitches on the needle and I just could not contemplate going any further. To me, crocheted cast-offs are fine for doilies but I really don’t like it for shawls. So I created a simple edging pattern which will hopefully enhance the look of finished shawl. I’m not out of the woods yet since I still have to do 288 repeats of the edging (1152/4 = 288). So far I’ve done 18 repeats.

Knitter’s ADD

Too many projects on the needle. I’m having a really difficult time focusing on any one in particular.

Forest Path Stole:
I’m now on tire 15. There will be no pictures until I finish the body. I still don’t know what to do for the border.

Unst:
I haven’t touched this in over a week. Once the body was finished I kind of lost interest. The Shetland shawl from AGOL is calling to me.

Balmoral:
This is just zipping along; 150 rows done, 70 to go. I’m a bit surprised at how quickly it’s going. I’m going to do a knitted on edging instead of the crocheted cast-off. It's just too hard to take good progress photos so the next one will be when I'm doing the edging.

Project in waiting.

Has anyone made the Shetland Shawl from AGOL?

I really want to make it but the traditional method with all that grafting just doesn’t interest me.

Since the border is knitted inwards, I can’t start with the center square, then pick up the border stitches. I’ve decided instead to knit the edging first then pick up the stitches for the borders and then work inward. I could then knit the centre square and attach the sides as I go along. This would leave only one long edge to graft on. I could also knit the square on the diagonal (point to point), again joining as I go along. This would mean no grafting at all. I would however have to re-chart the center square.

I know I already have three lace projects on the needle. The last thing I should be doing is starting another shawl. However, now that the body of the Unst is done, I feel justified to start a new Shetland lace project.
